LAWRENCE — A teenager and a young man were shot early yesterday morning on Amherst Street after an argument at a large house party.
The victims were treated at area hospitals and later released.
Police are trying to identify the shooter, though those questioned by police have been less than cooperative, police Chief John Romero said.
Emanuel Hernandez, 17, 83 Springfield St., was shot in the neck as he was leaving the party at 80 Amherst St., police said.
Miguel Suarez, 22, 10 Stevens St., was shot in the right hip, police said.
Shortly before 4 a.m., about 150 party-goers between 17 and 23 years old scattered as police converged on the scene, Romero said.
Police questioned about 20 people but no one identified the shooter, Romero said.
"My sense is people who were there know a lot more than what they are saying," Romero said. "We find it hard to believe that nobody saw anything."
What police have found out is there was an argument, either inside or outside the house.
The shootings took place outside the house and one person is believed to have been responsible, police said.
Police received multiple 911 calls describing the shooter as having long hair and wearing a red jacket, police said.
The party, at which there was alcohol present, is not far from Beacon Street.
Usually, it's a relatively quiet neighborhood, the police chief said.
Police are following leads and the investigation continues, Romero said.
Hernandez was transported to Lawrence General Hospital and transferred to Tufts Medical Center before being released, police said.
Suarez was transported to Lawrence General and later released, police said.
