LACONIA — A Pelham man was issued a traffic summons after crashing his motorcycle into a marked police motorcycle earlier today, state police said.

Gary Liles, 25, of Pelham, was riding his motorcycle on Route 3 in Laconia just before 11 a.m. when he collided with a motorcycle driven by Laconia police Officer Karl Atherton, state police said. Both men were taken to Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, where they were treated for minor injuries and released, according to a hospital spokesman.

State police said Liles turned left and crossed the solid double yellow line into the path of Officer Atherton near the Lobster Pound restaurant. Atherton attempted to stop, but the two collided in the northbound lane.

Both motorcycles were heavily damaged, state police said. Liles was issued a traffic summons for failure to yield.

Laconia is hosting the annual Laconia Motorcycle Week, which ends tomorrow.
